FIH Hockey Nations Cup Men’s Tournament: Opening Day Sees Wins for Ireland, France and Malaysia

Malaysia 5–2 Scotland (Pool A)

Malaysia claimed a commanding 5-2 win over Scotland, marking a strong start to their campaign. Mohamad Anuar Esook put Malaysia ahead early in the fourth minute. Though Scotland threatened with aerial attacks and created multiple penalty corner chances, solid Malaysian defence blocked most threats in the first quarter.

Malaysia stepped up efficiency after halftime. Mohammad Azrai starred with a sensational hat-trick, scoring from a penalty stroke in the 34th minute, a precise deflection and a close-range finish in the final stage. Aiman Rozemi also netted one goal to extend the lead. Scotland’s Jamie Golden scored a penalty stroke to pull one back but failed to save the game, wasting five other penalty corner opportunities.

Securing their third straight win against Scotland, Malaysia’s players expressed optimism. Man of the match Azrai credited team assists for his fine finishing, while Anuar noted the tough challenge from Scotland and stressed the need for greater focus in upcoming fixtures.

South Korea 1–1 Japan (Pool A)

Pool A’s other fixture ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw between South Korea and Japan. Korea dominated the first half, controlling possession and scoring the opener in the 27th minute via Dohyun Lim’s powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner. Japan struggled offensively in the first half with limited circle penetrations and possession.

Japan staged a remarkable comeback in the second half. Tsubasa Tanaka levelled the score in the 37th minute after a precise cross from Kazumasa Matsumoto. Both sides spurned key winning chances later in the game: Japan’s Koji Yamasaki missed a close-range penalty spot opportunity, while Korea failed to convert two promising goalscoring opportunities.

Veteran Japan forward Koji Yamasaki admitted the tight contest and highlighted the need to strengthen defence ahead of facing speedy side Malaysia. Korea’s Player of the Match Jonghyun Jang expressed regret over failing to secure a comeback victory.

Ireland 3–0 USA (Pool B)

World No.9 Ireland opened their Nations Cup campaign with a solid 3-0 shutout win over the USA in Pool B. Ireland dominated possession throughout the match, adopting a patient attacking approach in the first quarter before stepping up aggression in the second.

Ben Johnson marked his 50th international cap by scoring Ireland’s opening goal early in the second quarter. Greg Williams doubled the lead via a low drag-flick from a penalty corner before halftime. The USA improved their competitiveness in the second half, yet conceded a third goal as Fergus Gibson slotted home a well-assisted finish in the 48th minute.

Player of the Match Ben Johnson stated the team was satisfied with the opening three points, acknowledging the challenging rainy, windy conditions and the USA’s compact, tough-to-break defensive setup, adding Ireland would take each subsequent game step by step.

France 4–2 South Africa (Pool B)

France staged a second-half comeback to beat hosts South Africa 4-2 in the day’s final fixture, with Victor Charlet scoring a sensational hat-trick from set pieces.

France controlled the game’s tempo and created far more chances but wasted multiple opportunities in the first half. Corentin Sellier gave France an early lead, yet South Africa fought back swiftly. The host side capitalised on counter-attacks, with debutant Kenton Melville and Carlon Mentoor scoring one goal each to secure a 2-1 halftime lead.

Turning the tide after the break, France’s Charlet scored three consecutive set piece goals, putting his side in front. South Africa squandered a late penalty corner chance to equalise, and a last-minute French counter-attack won a penalty stroke, which Charlet converted to seal the 4-2 victory.
Named Player of the Match, Corentin Sellier praised teammate Charlet’s decisive performance, noting the team thrived  in physical encounters and delivered a solid overall display.
