Hong Kong Makes History as Discovery Bay Hosts Three IIHF Tournaments

The tournaments will take place from March to April at Discovery Bay Ice Rink, bringing together more than 400 players, coaches, and officials from 14 countries and regions.

Three Tournaments, One Historic Moment

The three events include:

2026 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group A – March 2–8

2026 IIHF Women's World Championship Division II Group B – March 30–April 5

2026 IIHF Men's World Championship Division III Group B – April 13–19

Hong Kong's men's, women's and U18 national teams will compete against international opponents on home ice, adding extra excitement for local fans.

Widely regarded as the “Olympics of ice hockey,” these championships represent some of the sport's most prestigious international competitions.

Grand Opening and Public Engagement

An opening ceremony for the U18 tournament was held on March 2, featuring a spectacular drone light show and a live orchestral performance.

To bring the action to a wider audience, matches will be broadcast live online and on a large LED screen at Central Pier No. 3, allowing the public to follow the games from one of Hong Kong's busiest waterfront locations.

Infrastructure Upgrades and "Ice Hockey Village"Discovery Bay's infrastructure played a key role in securing the three tournaments. The ice rink has undergone significant upgrades to meet IIHF international standards, including improvements to lighting, protective structures, and player facilities.

The development is set to transform into an “Ice Hockey Village,” with the rink, hotel, and shopping areas providing accommodation, training, and support services for athletes and visitors alike.

Boosting Sports, Culture and Tourism Organizers said the tournaments will showcase Hong Kong's capability to host international sporting competitions while promoting sports, culture and tourism development.

The events are expected to attract spectators both in person and online, capitalizing on growing interest in winter sports across Asia.

Discovery Bay aims to establish itself as a year-round sports and leisure destination, with plans to host a variety of events ranging from ice sports to triathlons, tennis, and beach competitions in the future.
